Pauline Marcelle, born in Calibishie, Dominica West Indies, lives and works in Vienna, Austria. She graduated 2000 in Fine Arts from the University of Applied and Contemporary Arts in Vienna, where she obtained an MFA in painting, graphics and film animation.
Marcelle’s oeuvre engages paintings, sculptures and video that reflect human interaction and the influential impact of their social and mental environments. She adapts digital collages to painterly parameters, transforming them into pictorial form, continually entering into relations, composing and recomposing relations. The conundrum of the painterly and the photographic characterizes her paintings.
Her sculptures are fleshy in color and texture with the appearance of veins and arteries, strongly resembling human organs, or even newly shaped clothes. The works tell tales of the journeys and fate of second-hand clothing from overconsumption in the throw-away society to the street vendors in developing worlds.
Awareness and exposure become self-protecting terms for human vulnerability, and Marcelle questions inner and outer ideals and explores the consequences of her own consumption. The visual and mental content focuses on human needs, lusts and desires ignoring the boundaries of race and creed.
Marcelle has received several awards and grants and her work is in numerous public and private collections. Solo and group exhibitions of her work have been organized by museums, galleries and spaces and she has participated extensively in exhibitions in Africa, USA and Europe.
